Freeways (especially in urban areas) have signs indicating the next few exits in both the centre divide and the right-hand hard shoulder.  So you should know at least 5km in advance which is your exit. As a general guide the right-hand lane is for cars joining or about to exit the freeway, so once you are on the motorway move left into at least the second lane.

Overtaking on freeways is allowed from any lane and undertaking is perfectly legal.  You must indicate before any change of lane. As with UK motorways, trucks and other heavy goods vehicles are not allowed in the outer lanes.

Four Way Stop is perhaps the hardest sign for UK drivers.  Basically this is an intersection of two roads so there are 4 roads meeting at the intersection.  The rule is that the first car to arrive goes first, followed by the second, and so on.

Car Pool Lanes in California are indicated with a white diamond painted on the road.  You can only use these lanes if there are two or more people in the car.  You will be fined if you break this rule. Some freeways have car pool lanes next to the centre divide with centre off-ramps to allow exit without having to cut across lots of traffic in the other lanes.

Schools have speed limits of 15mph when warning lights are flashing.  You must stop and give way to school buses when they have their lights flashing.  These rules are strictly enforced and carry heavy penalties.
