There is a choice of 6 major car hire companies available at the airport.  All are located in the in the Rental Car Centre which is located in Terminal 1 (head for concourse B Security Checkpoint).

If you are using Terminals 2, 3 or 4, you will see signs for the Cypress Garage, Rental Car Centre.  These will direct you to a pick up area where a shuttle bus, which is free, will take you to the Centre.  The bus pick up is on the baggage claim level.

When you come to Fort Lauderdale in Florida it is a good idea to organise a hire car as public transportation is restrictive and taxis become expensive very quickly. If you request a standard transmission, the rental company will probably have none available as they are extremely uncommon. If you are travelling with children under 2 years of age make sure you have a child's car restraint seat or request one from the rental agency as it is illegal to carry small children in a car without safety restraint seats in most states.
