Florida Airports General Information
Florida has more large commercial airports than any other state in the US with 120 million passengers using their airports every year. Over 50% of Florida Airports offer international flights on scheduled airlines with almost all international visitors arriving there by air.
Florida cities enjoy non-stop scheduled passenger service to over 160 U.S. and international destinations.
it is predicted that by 2035 Florida will have over 30 million residents with 1,000 people moving there each day. More than 90% of Floridians live within 30 minutes or less of an airport and it is no surprise therefore that air travel to Florida is growing at a rate which is twice the national average.
Close to 3.5 million tons of air cargo passes through Florida’s airports annually. As the top US airport for international air cargo and the second busiest in the world, Miami International Airport handles over 70% of Florida’s international airline trade. 25% of the state's gross profit is tied to aviation as it contributes over $96 billion annually to the economy.
Flying from Florida
Flying long haul from Florida to various destinations in Europe is now relatively cheap and easy, with companies including Virgin Airlines and Delta making long distance travel accessible to many more people over the last 10 years.
Transatlantic flight has certainly come a long way since the famous aviator Charles Lindbergh became the first pilot to successfully complete a nonstop flight across the Atlantic in 1927 in his Spirit of St Louis , departing from New York City and arriving in Paris some 33 hours later!
Because of its fabulous climate Florida also handles a large number of domestic passengers from other parts of the USA. To give you some idea of flying times:
| Tampa | 3 hours from New York City | 2.5 hours from Chicago |
| Fort Lauderdale | 2.5 hours from Washington DC | 3.5 hours from Boston |
| Fort Myers | 1.5 hours from Atlanta | 3 hours from New York |
| Daytona Beach | 1 hour from Atlanta | 2.5 hours from Newark |
Flying from Miami
Miami has two airports: Miami International Airport and Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport. MIA is closer to town (19km), has more connections and is one of the busiest airports in the US.
Most major European airlines have services to Miami, although there is no direct service from Australia or New Zealand; and if you are travelling from those parts of the world you will have to change planes in Los Angeles.
The best deals to Miami within the US are from New York area airports, but the New York-Miami route is also the most crowded.
Miami International Airport is served by public bus, but private shuttle vans, taxis and limos are more convenient alternatives. Often discounted tickets to Miami actually land at new terminal at Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport.
This is a great airport with plenty of car hire agencies, shuttle buses and taxis ready to take you into Miami.
The trip to Miami Beach by bus takes about two hours, and there is a shuttle bus to the Tri-Rail station at the airport, with trains going to the edge of downtown Miami hourly during rush hours, and once every two hours in the middle of the day.
